What is a Batterers’ Intervention Program?

In Florida, the Batterers’ Intervention Program (BIP) is a court-ordered, 29 week long program, including 24 weekly group counseling sessions, intake, assessment, and orientation.

BIP is for perpetrators of domestic violence, as defined by Fl. Stat. 741.28.

The primary purpose of a BIP is to promote victim safety and the safety of children.

The batterer shall be held accountable for acts of domestic violence.

BIP content shall be based on a psychoeducational model that addresses tactics of power and control by one person over another.
The certification and monitoring of batterer intervention programs by the Department of Children and Families is no longer required as a result of legislation adopted by 2012 Legislature and approved by the Governor. (See Florida Department of Children and Families.)
